We build an individualised Depression treatment programme for each and every client. In everything we do, the team at Harmony is professional, compassionate, welcoming, solution-orientated, non-judgmental and caring.
Depression is more than just feeling sad or having a bad day, it’s a serious mental health condition that affects millions of people worldwide, including many here in South Africa.
At Harmony Psychiatric Clinic in Cape Town, we provide compassionate, professional care for individuals struggling with depression, helping them reclaim their mental wellness and quality of life.
10 Reasons clients agree Harmony Clinic is A LEADING PSYCHIATRIC FACILITY & rehab in SOUTH AFRICA
We are a fully licensed Rehab in South Africa, able to treat clients with substance use disorders and/or mental health concerns, thereby focusing on all of the client’s needs.
We work hand in hand with our clients’ families, employers and referring professionals to enhance the chance of a success story.
We have over a decade of experience, giving people suffering from addiction the very best chance of recovery.
We are made up of leading psychiatrists, experienced detox GP’s, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, addiction councillors and registered nurses. Every team member represents what we stand for – caring, compassionate, professional, experienced and competent.
A big barrier to rehabilitation programmes is the cost. We work with most medical aids to cover rehabilitation and psychiatric treatment. This means you have access to the best care, without the prohibitive cost. What’s more, we will take care of all the administration and paperwork so you don’t have to.
We are one of the few facilities with a specialised medically managed detox unit with 24-hour care.
Our intention is to be the last rehabilitation facility a client will ever visit. They will either make a full recovery first time round or they will continue their recovery process with us. Either way, we are always here for them.
We are a fully licensed facility in South Africa, able to treat clients with substance use disorders and/or mental health concerns, thereby focusing on all of the client’s needs.
Based in the scenic valley of Hout Bay in Cape Town, Harmony offers comfortable accommodation, good food, a tennis court, gym and swimming pool. In addition, clients can enjoy the beautiful surroundings whilst taking walks on local beaches and mountain hikes. All included of the daily treatment programme.
Addiction is often linked to an underlying trauma. This is usually identified in the first few weeks of rehabilitation and we offer a secondary care programme focussing on resolving this trauma. Research shows that clients who spend a longer time in a rehabilitation programme, have a better chance of success and leading happy lives.
We strive to be your best chance of getting through this depression once and for all.
OUR DEPRSSION FACILITY
Our facility offers comfortable accommodation, with the option of a private room, good food, a tennis court, gym and swimming pool, as well as table tennis and pool in the games room. In addition, clients have access to our beautiful surroundings, including walks on the local beaches and nearby mountain hikes. All of this forms part of the daily treatment programme.
Harmony can be found in the beautiful village of Hout Bay. Our location is surrounded by mountains and the ocean, offering a tranquil environment for rehabilitation and making it one of the most picturesque rehabilitation centres in South Africa.

“Thank you to Harmony for showing me there is a way out from the darkness of active addiction and there is light on the other side.”
On this day exactly 6 months ago, I walked into Harmony afraid, broken and hopeless.
I couldn’t see a way out of my addiction after failing to recover so many times in 15 years. I want to say thank you to Harmony for showing me there is a way out from the darkness of active addiction and there is light on the other side. Yesterday I “celebrated” 19 months clean and sober.
A HUGE thank you again to Harmony for giving me a great start to my new life of sobriety. You guys made me see what life would be like without the use of drugs and other mind-altering substances, and for that I am eternally grateful.

“What addiction took from me, recovery is giving back to me one day at a time.”
On this day 4 years ago I entered the gates of Harmony, needing a new way of life but very much in denial of that fact. Through patience and perseverance I was able to find a new way of life, and today 4 years later, I still want to live this new way of life more than ever. What addiction took from me, recovery is giving back to me one day at a time. I am forever grateful to Harmony and to everyone who has been a part of my journey.

Getting used to being treated so well was really difficult. Learning to trust, be vulnerable, honest and secure… scary stuff!! Ups and downs I wouldn’t have made it through had I not got the tools I did at Harmony.
Thank you so much especially for your patience as I had real asshole behaviour when I was there. Thank you for your patience with me and thank you and all the other staff for all your gifts and wisdom. They are so appreciated and I am so grateful.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Depression (also known as major depressive disorder) is a mood disorder characterized by persistent sadness, low energy, and a loss of interest in activities that once brought joy. It can affect every area of life, your work, relationships, physical health, and overall functioning.
While everyone feels down from time to time, clinical depression is more intense and long-lasting. Without proper diagnosis and treatment, it can significantly impair one’s ability to cope with daily life.
People with depression may experience a combination of emotional, cognitive, and physical symptoms. These may vary depending on the individual, but common signs include:
- Ongoing sadness or hopelessness
- Irritability or restlessness
- Loss of interest in hobbies or social activities
- Fatigue or lack of energy
- Changes in appetite or weight
- Difficulty sleeping or oversleeping
- Trouble concentrating or making decisions
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or self-blame
- Thoughts of death or suicide
If these symptoms persist for more than two weeks, it may be time to speak with a mental health professional.
There are several types of depression, each with unique characteristics and treatment needs:
- Major Depressive Disorder – Intense symptoms that interfere with daily life
- Persistent Depressive Disorder – A milder but long-term form lasting two years or more
- Postpartum Depression – Occurs after childbirth, affecting mood and bonding
- Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) – Triggered by changes in seasons, often during winter
- Bipolar Disorder – Alternating periods of depression and mania
- Situational Depression – Triggered by stressful life events
Our team of psychiatrists and psychologists in Cape Town are experienced in diagnosing and treating all types of depression.
The exact cause of depression is not always clear, but it often results from a mix of biological, psychological, and environmental factors.
Contributing factors may include:
-
- Family history of depression or mental illness
- Major life changes (e.g., divorce, loss of a loved one)
- Ongoing stress or trauma
- Chronic illness or physical pain
- Hormonal changes (e.g., postpartum depression)
- Substance abuse
- Certain medications
Understanding these root causes is essential for building a treatment plan that works.
Effective treatment for depression can help individuals recover, rebuild their lives, and regain hope.
At Harmony Psychiatric Clinic, we offer:
- Psychiatric Evaluation & Medication – Antidepressants or mood stabilisers prescribed and managed by a qualified psychiatrist
- Individual Psychotherapy – Talk therapy (such as CBT or psychodynamic therapy) to explore and address underlying issues
- Group Therapy – Safe, supportive sessions to share and learn from others
- Family Counselling – Helps rebuild healthy relationships and communication
- Lifestyle & Nutritional Guidance – Supports overall mental health and well-being
All treatment plans are tailored to each individual’s needs and are delivered in a safe, private, and supportive environment.
At Harmony Psychiatric Clinic, depression diagnosis involves a comprehensive assessment by a licensed psychiatrist or clinical psychologist. This may include:
- A clinical interview
- Psychological questionnaires
- A review of personal and family medical history
- Evaluation of mood, thoughts, and behaviour patterns
We take a holistic approach, ensuring that any co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, substance abuse, or trauma are also considered.
Psychiatrists in Cape Town are medical doctors trained in diagnosing, treating, and managing mental health conditions. Unlike psychologists or therapists, psychiatrists can prescribe medication and provide clinical management for conditions like:
- Anxiety disorders
- Depression and bipolar disorder
- Schizophrenia and psychosis
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Substance use disorders and addiction
At our rehab centre, psychiatrists play a central role in designing safe and effective treatment plans tailored to both mental and physical needs.
Psychologists in Cape Town are trained professionals who help people manage emotional, behavioural, and psychological challenges. While they don’t prescribe medication, psychologists use various forms of psychotherapy (talk therapy) to:
- Treat mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and addiction
- Help individuals identify harmful thought patterns
- Support emotional regulation and behaviour change
- Improve communication and relationship skills
- Address trauma and grief
At Alcohol Rehab Cape Town, psychologists are a vital part of the multidisciplinary team.
Psychologists play an essential role in addiction recovery by addressing the mental and emotional aspects of substance use. Working with psychologists in Cape Town during rehab provides:
- A safe, confidential space to explore trauma or triggers
- Tools to cope with cravings and prevent relapse
- Support in rebuilding self-esteem and setting goals
- Guidance on managing stress without substances
- Structure to help clients stay accountable
Psychotherapy can also support long-term change through personalised behaviour modification.
Different individuals require different therapeutic approaches. At Alcohol Rehab Cape Town, our psychologists in Cape Town are trained in evidence-based modalities, including:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Helps clients identify and change unhelpful thinking patterns.
- Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT): Supports emotional regulation and distress tolerance.
- Trauma-Informed Therapy: Ideal for clients with a history of abuse, neglect, or PTSD.
- Motivational Interviewing (MI): Enhances a person’s motivation to change.
- Group Therapy: Encourages peer support and shared healing in a structured setting.
Each therapy type can be tailored to meet the unique needs of the individual.
While both psychologists and psychiatrists deal with mental health, their roles differ significantly:
- Psychologists focus on psychotherapy, counselling, and behavioural interventions. They hold a Master’s or Doctoral degree in psychology.
- Psychiatrists are medical doctors who diagnose psychiatric conditions and can prescribe medication.
Both play vital roles in a comprehensive treatment plan. At our rehab centre, we offer integrated care from both psychologists in Cape Town and psychiatrists.
Many people wonder when to seek help from a psychologist. Here are signs that you or someone you love might benefit from therapy:
- You feel overwhelmed by stress, sadness, or fear
- You use alcohol or drugs to numb emotional pain
- You’ve experienced a traumatic event or loss
- You struggle with relationships or anger issues
- You want to improve self-awareness and mental health
If you’re facing any of these challenges, it’s time to speak to a qualified psychologist.
Finding the right fit is key to a successful therapy journey. When searching for psychologists in Cape Town, consider:
- Specialisation: Do they have experience with addiction, trauma, or dual diagnosis?
- Approach: Are they solution-focused, cognitive-behavioural, or trauma-informed?
- Location: Is the psychologist based near you or available via online sessions?
- Reputation: Look for testimonials or reviews from past clients.
At Alcohol Rehab Cape Town, we work only with trusted, accredited psychologists who meet high clinical standards.
All clients at our rehab facility in Cape Town receive one-on-one sessions with our on-site psychologists. These sessions are integrated into the broader treatment plan, which may include:
- Psychiatric evaluation
- Medical detox
- Group therapy
- Family counselling
- Aftercare planning
Working with a psychologist in Cape Town during rehab ensures a holistic and sustainable approach to addiction recovery.
When working with psychiatrists in Cape Town, patients can expect a compassionate, non-judgmental approach. Initial consultations typically involve:
- A comprehensive psychiatric assessment
- Family history and past mental health evaluations
- Substance use history and behavioural review
- Diagnosis and treatment planning
- Medication management (if required)
Follow-ups help monitor progress, adjust medications, and coordinate with other members of the treatment team, including psychologists, therapists and support staff.
Yes, many medical aids in South Africa do cover the costs associated with rehabilitation, including services at a rehab clinic in South Africa. Coverage often includes various types of treatment such as inpatient care, outpatient programs, and detoxification services. Each medical aid plan differs in terms of what is covered, so it is crucial to review your policy details. Most plans cover essential aspects of rehab, including medical care, therapy sessions, and medications. For those considering drug rehab in Durban, it’s important to understand whether your medical aid requires pre-authorisation for rehab services. This usually involves submitting a treatment plan and obtaining approval before starting the program to ensure coverage.
At Harmony Clinic, we assist patients in navigating their medical aid options to ensure they receive the financial support needed for their treatment. Our team helps with the documentation and claims process, making it easier for patients to access the comprehensive care they need. This includes inpatient and outpatient services tailored to individual recovery goals. We recommend contacting your medical aid provider directly to confirm specific details about coverage and any potential exclusions. Understanding your plan can help you make informed decisions about your rehabilitation options and minimise out-of-pocket expenses during your stay at our rehab clinic in South Africa or during drug rehab in Durban.
Addiction is a complex brain disease, often rooted in mental health challenges. Many people struggling with substance use also suffer from conditions like anxiety, depression, or trauma. Seeing a psychiatrist in Cape Town can help:
- Identify underlying causes of addiction
- Manage withdrawal symptoms and cravings
- Stabilise mood and reduce relapse risk
- Provide safe prescription medication where needed
- Monitor overall mental health during recovery
Psychiatric care is especially vital during detox and the early stages of rehabilitation when emotional regulation is most difficult.
The effectiveness of drug rehab in South Africa depends on several critical factors, including the type of program offered, its duration, and the individual needs of each patient. Different rehabilitation strategies can have varying impacts based on how well they match the patient’s specific situation and the extent of their addiction. For instance, inpatient rehabilitation programs, which provide a more intensive and structured environment, may be essential for those grappling with severe addiction issues. Conversely, outpatient programs offer flexibility, allowing individuals to continue their daily responsibilities while receiving treatment. The incorporation of evidence-based therapies, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), and holistic approaches, can significantly boost the effectiveness of the rehabilitation process. According to research by the Butler Center for Research, there are promising success rates for recovery, with studies showing that between 85% and 95% of individuals who complete their treatment programs remain abstinent from drugs nine months after discharge. These statistics highlight the importance of comprehensive, professional care in achieving long-term recovery and abstinence.
Moreover, the research indicates that approximately 70% of those who have participated in drug rehab in South Africa maintain their sobriety six months after treatment, and about 76% manage to sustain their recovery for at least three months. These figures underscore the lasting success of well-executed rehabilitation programs and the vital role of continued support services in promoting sustained sobriety. Such data not only demonstrates the potential for immediate recovery but also emphasises the significance of ongoing care and follow-up in ensuring long-term success. At Harmony Clinic, a prominent drug rehab in Pretoria, we prioritise a comprehensive approach to addiction treatment. Our programs are designed to address the complex nature of addiction through a combination of counselling, medical support, and extensive follow-up care. Our integrated model aims to provide individuals with the essential tools to overcome addiction, enhance their quality of life, and maintain long-term recovery. Our counselling services delve into the underlying causes of addiction, while our medical support facilitates safe detoxification and management of withdrawal symptoms. Additionally, our robust follow-up programs offer continuous support, guiding individuals through the challenges of post-rehab life and helping them stay on the path to a healthier, drug-free future.
Addiction can disrupt relationships, work, and overall health. Drug and alcohol rehabilitation offers a supportive path forward, empowering clients with the tools necessary for lasting recovery. Some key benefits of attending a rehab clinic include:
- Counselling: A supportive, non-judgmental environment where clients learn effective coping strategies to face addiction realistically and confidently handle life’s challenges.
- Medical Assistance: Detoxification can require medical assistance, especially for substances like alcohol that may cause severe complications. At our rehab centre, clients receive safe, supervised detox care.
- Restoring Sociability: Addiction often isolates people, damaging relationships. At Harmony Clinic, a rehab clinic in South Africa, clients learn to socialise, rebuild connections, and restore relationships with family, friends, and fellow patients.
Attempting to manage detox and recovery alone can be dangerous, especially with alcohol addiction. Our rehab centre offers comprehensive support, ensuring clients regain purpose and safely recover.
Dual diagnosis means a person is managing both a substance use disorder and a co-occurring mental health condition, such as anxiety or depression. Treating both conditions simultaneously is vital for a sustained recovery. At Harmony Clinic, a dual-diagnosis drug rehab clinic in South Africa, we provide comprehensive psychiatric and substance abuse care.
Our integrated approach identifies underlying trauma that often drives addiction. With longer stays ranging from 21 days to 6 months onwards in our step-down facility, patients receive in-depth care tailored to their needs. Combining psychiatric and addiction treatment, we stabilise mental health while addressing substance abuse challenges to lay a strong foundation for full recovery.
Selecting the right drug rehab centre in Houghton is crucial for recovery. Consider these factors:
- Track Record: Choose a rehab clinic with a proven track record in addiction recovery, indicating years of success.
- Licensing and Registration: Make sure the clinic is licensed and registered with health authorities to ensure quality standards.
- Compassionate and Experienced Team: An empathetic, knowledgeable team can provide personalised care throughout recovery.
- Medical Detox Unit: If alcohol or other substances are involved, detox may require medical supervision.
- Holistic Approach: A facility that considers the influence of family, work, and social life on recovery can create practical strategies for lasting success.
- Insurance or Medical Aid Coverage: Ensure the rehab centre accepts health insurance or medical aid to make treatment more accessible.
Harmony Clinic, a rehab clinic in South Africa, provides a compassionate, comprehensive approach to treatment, meeting all these criteria to ensure holistic patient care.
Treatment plans depend on addiction severity, personal circumstances, and patient needs. Inpatient rehab programs are immersive, providing a structured environment where clients live onsite and focus entirely on their recovery.
Outpatient programs are a flexible option for those balancing work or family while attending regular therapy sessions. At Harmony Clinic, a drug rehab centre, we help you navigate inpatient and outpatient treatment options to find a solution that fits your lifestyle, giving you the best chance of successful recovery.
Dual diagnosis refers to the presence of both a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder. This is extremely common among people seeking help at our Cape Town rehab. Psychiatrists provide integrated care to treat both conditions simultaneously.
For example:
- A person with depression and alcohol addiction may receive antidepressants along with addiction counselling.
- Someone with PTSD and opioid use may benefit from trauma-focused therapy combined with psychiatric care.
Treating one condition without the other often leads to relapse. That’s why our psychiatrists are trained in dual diagnosis protocols.
A common question we get is: What’s the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?
- Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MDs) who can prescribe medication and treat serious mental illnesses.
- Psychologists or therapists offer counselling and talk therapy but typically cannot prescribe medication.
At Alcohol Rehab Cape Town, we believe in a combined treatment approach—our psychiatrists, psychologists, and therapists work together to provide holistic care.
You may benefit from seeing one of our psychiatrists in Cape Town if you:
- Feel overwhelmed by stress, fear, or depression
- Have tried to quit substances but keep relapsing
- Experience mood swings, paranoia, or suicidal thoughts
- Have been diagnosed with a mental illness
- Are struggling with medication management or side effects
